Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)

To promote the students in pursuing higher education in Basic Sciences and encourage them to carry out quality research in the field, the Government of India has started the National level Fellowship programme of KVPY which grants fellowship to students motivated to take up basic science courses and research career.

KVPY is a Fellowship Programme funded by the Department of Science & Technology and administered by the Indian Institute of Science. The students who are granted the fellowship are offered scholarships and contingency grants up to the pre-Ph.D. level. The aim of the fellowship is to promote the highly talented students who are motivated in basic sciences and thereby maintain the quality of scientific research carried out in our country.


Eligibility

If a student meets the following criteria then he/she is qualified to appear for the Stream SA of the exam:

  1. Gender: Both genders are allowed
  2. Currently Enrolled in Std XI (Science stream)
  3. Marks: Minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in Mathematics and Science subjects in STD X board exams
  4. If the fellowship is granted, the student must score at least 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in their STD XII/(+2) Board Exams
  5. The student must take up the undergraduate course in Basic Science (Sc. /B.S. /B.Stat. /B.Math. /Int. M.Sc. /Int. M.S.) after XII/(+2) level

  1. Gender: Both genders are allowed
  2. Currently Enrolled in Std XII (Science stream)
  3. Marks: Minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in Mathematics and Science subjects in STD X board exams and 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in their STD XII/(+2) Board Exams
  4. If the fellowship is granted, the student must take up the undergraduate course in Basic Science (B.Sc. /B.S. /B.Stat. /B.Math. /Int. M.Sc. /Int. M.S.) after XII/(+2) level   

If a student meets the following criteria then he/she is qualified to appear for the Stream SB of the exam:

  1. Gender: Both genders are allowed
  2. Currently enrolled in: First year of undergraduate course in Basic Science (Sc. /B.S. /B.Stat. /B.Math. /Int. M.Sc. /Int. M.S.)
  3. Marks: Minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) aggregate marks in XII/ (+2) exam
  4. If the fellowship is awarded the student must score 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in the first year of the undergraduate course

How To Apply

Application Procedure:

  1. The application process for the exam is completely online
  2. To fill the online application form click here
  3. It consists of three stages:
    • Stage 1: Registration
    • Stage 2: Filling personal and academic details along with the photo, signature and any applicable certificates. The test center is also selected at this stage
    • Stage 3: Payment of examination fees (Rs. 1000 for General/OBC and Rs. 500 for SC/ST/PWD)

Syllabus

  1. In the Stream SA  all the questions are compulsory (Science and Mathematics)
  2. In the Streams SB and SX, there will be 4 sections in Part I(Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics) and 4 sections in Part II (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics)
  3. Candidates  are allowed to answer any 3 of the four subjects in Part I and any 2 of the four subjects in Part II
  4. The exam is available in English and Hindi
  5. There is no prescribed syllabus as the students are tested on their analytical ability and understanding of the subjects of Science and Maths

  • In order to continue your fellowship, you must score a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) every year (or semester for semester system)
  • If the student doesn’t pass all the subjects with the required marks then the fellowship will be withdrawn
  • If the student scores the required marks in the next exams then the fellowship will continue but only from that year
  • The marks must be certified by the Dean or Head of the Institute
  • The fellowship continues up to pre-Ph.D. level or 5 years from the commencement of the fellowship


FAQs

Q.1. What is the entry/registration fee for the exam?

Ans. The entry for General and OBC students is Rs. 1000 and for the SC/ST/PWD is Rs. 500

 

Q.2. What is the computer-based exam?

Ans. The exam is supposed to be given on a computer in the respective examination center mentioned on the Admit Card.

 

Q.3. It is an online exam; does it mean I can give it from my home?

Ans. No. You must be present at your respective examination center.

 

Q.4. From where can I prepare for the exam?

Ans. You can prepare for the exam from online and offline material available to you. The website of KVPY has a practice mock test which is recommended to be given by all students.

 

Q.5. What languages can the exam be given?

Ans. The exam can be given in English or Hindi

 

Q.6. Do I need to study all the 4 subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Maths)?

Ans. If you want to appear for Stream SA then all subjects are compulsory. For Stream SB/SX in Part I you need to give any 3 subjects and in Part II you need to give any 2 subjects.
